Standing at 6,189 meters, Island Peak—locally known as Imja Tse—was named by English mountaineer Eric Shipton in 1951. The name “Island Peak” reflects its striking, isolated position, surrounded by glaciers flowing down from towering mountains above 7,000 m and 8,000 m, giving it the appearance of an island in a sea of ice.
