The Langtang Tamang Heritage Trek is a newly opened route in the Langtang region, developed under the Tourism for Rural Poverty Alleviation Program (RPAP). This off-the-beaten-path trek offers a unique chance to explore the ancient lifestyle of the Tamang community, set against the backdrop of stunning natural scenery.
This trek allows you to immerse yourself in Tamang culture, which has deep historical ties to Tibetan civilization. Most Tamangs are farmers or traders, and as you pass through their villages, you’ll see forests rich with wildlife, seasonal rhododendron blooms, lush meadows, majestic waterfalls, and sacred lakes such as Gosai Kunda and Bhirab Kunda.
Your journey begins with a drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubensi, followed by a trek to Gatlang, a hillside village surrounded by terraced fields. Here, you can visit a Tamang monastery and the sacred Parvati Kunda Lake.
From Gatlang, the trail leads to Tatopani—which literally means “hot water”—famous for its natural hot springs believed to have healing powers. Next is Thuman, a village known for its open grasslands, panoramic Himalayan views, and traditional shamanic practices.
Continuing along the old trade route to Tibet, you reach Briddim, just three hours from the border. This close-knit Tamang community offers a chance to visit the Dukchu Gompa (monastery). From Briddim, the trek joins the classic Langtang Valley trail, arriving at Lama Hotel after six hours of walking through lush forests, where you may spot red pandas in the wild.
An early morning trek from Lama Hotel takes you along riverbanks to Ghoda Tabela, an army check post for permit verification. The trail then passes Chyamiki Village before reaching Langtang, a traditional Tamang settlement.
From Langtang, the trek continues to Kyanjin Gompa, passing small plateaus, yak pastures, and villages. You’ll have an extra day in Kyanjin Gompa to explore local monasteries, visit a cheese factory, or hike to Tserko Ri Viewpoint for breathtaking views of Langtang Lirung (7,227m), Langtang II (6,586m), and surrounding snow-capped peaks.
