Permits for Treks and Expeditions in Nepal.
Trekking and mountaineering in Nepal require official permits to ensure traveler safety, protect the environment, and follow government regulations. At Guide the Himalayas, we take care of all required permits on your behalf, so you can enjoy a smooth, worry-free, and fully legal adventure.
Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) Card
The TIMS Card is mandatory for all foreign trekkers and helps authorities track trekking routes for safety purposes.
As per government regulations (effective April 2023), solo trekking without a licensed guide is not permitted.
TIMS cards must be issued through a registered trekking agency, such as Guide the Himalayas.
National Park & Conservation Area Permits
Required for trekking in protected regions including Sagarmatha (Everest), Annapurna, Langtang, Manaslu, and other conservation areas.
Permit fees contribute directly to wildlife protection, forest conservation, and local community development.
Trekkers must carry their permits at all times during the trek, as checks are conducted along the trails.
Restricted Area Permits (RAP)
Special permits are required for remote and restricted regions such as Upper Mustang, Upper Dolpo, and Manaslu.
These areas require trekking with a licensed guide and, in most cases, a minimum group size.
Permit fees vary depending on the region and length of stay.
Expedition & Peak Climbing Permits
Any peak climbing or expedition requires official permits:
Peaks above 7,000 meters: Permits issued by the Department of Tourism
Peaks below 7,000 meters: Permits issued by the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA)
Permit fees depend on the mountain, season, and peak height.
Garbage Deposit & Environmental Regulations
All climbing expeditions must submit a refundable garbage deposit to ensure proper waste management.
Climbers on Mount Everest are required to bring down at least 8 kg of solid waste per person as part of environmental protection rules.
These measures help preserve Nepal’s fragile mountain ecosystems for future generations.
How We Arrange Your Permits
Guide the Himalayas manages all permits for you before your trek or expedition. The required documents include:
A valid passport
Two passport-size photographs

Once issued, we ensure all permits are ready before departure. Trekkers must carry their permits throughout the journey.
